AVI to MKV Converter FAQs

You should convert an AVI to an MKV to upgrade your video's capabilities and flexibility. The MKV container is a much more powerful and modern open-source standard. It excels at handling multiple audio tracks and various subtitle formats, features that are poorly supported by the older AVI format.

In many cases, there is no quality loss at all. If the video and audio streams inside your AVI are already in a compatible format, our converter can simply copy them directly into the new MKV container. This process, called remuxing, is extremely fast and perfectly preserves the original quality.

The biggest new feature is robust support for multiple tracks in a single file. An MKV file can easily hold several different audio tracks, such as for different languages or director's commentary, and it can also contain multiple subtitle tracks. This makes it an ideal format for storing a complete version of a movie or show.

This depends on the conversion method. If the video and audio tracks are simply copied (remuxed) without being re-encoded, the final MKV file will be almost exactly the same size. If the tracks need to be re-encoded into a more modern format, the file size could change, and often it will become smaller.

This tool is designed for format conversion, not video editing, so you cannot add a new subtitle track during the process. However, the MKV format is the perfect choice for this task. After you've converted your file, you can easily add subtitle files to your new MKV using free, dedicated software like MKVToolNix.
